After all, the old tales say that’s their most dangerous power: those who meet them may never want to leave. Getting them back out will be the hard part. Getting your characters into the Undying Lands is easy. Just don’t expect them to live again when you clap your hands. Here are the goblins and trolls, the ogres and pixies, and yes, even tinkerbell-like faeries who fly around on glittering wings. Here are the fae described in the old tales, the sidhe whose beauty surpasses all knowledge, the niskies who live in the streams and oceans, the wee folk who live in tiny cottages. A faerie-land, though not in the way most people today think of it. The Undying Lands takes ordinary, everyday people and puts them into a fantasy world. Even children smart enough to leave a trail disappear if they wander into the woods. These stories weren’t told to children to amuse them they were told to terrify them and teach harsh lessons. In the original stories, the witch eats Hansel and Gretl, Snow White’s Prince Charming was definitely a necrophiliac, and Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother certainly does not hop out of the wolf after the woodchopper kills it with his axe. Stories of fairies granting wishes, doing our housework, or replacing teeth with coins are modern sugar-coated versions. ![]() It is unknown how Manwë took to Gimli’s arrival, as he would have killed Earendil for coming to Valinor uninvited and only spared him because he came on behalf of Elves and Men.Most of us today know that the “fairy tales” we were told as children are watered-down, G-rated versions of the originals. Fourth Age Įventually, Samwise Gamgee, another Hobbit of the Shire, and the Dwarf Gimli along with his great friend Legolas made the journey to the Undying Lands. They were among the very few mortal beings to be allowed passage to the Undying Lands. They were also joined by Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, Hobbits who were known for bearing the One Ring. In TA 3021, Círdan the Shipwright accompanied Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf, the Keepers of the Rings, on a voyage to the Undying Lands, where they intended to remain. Elves were still permitted to sail across the sea to the Undying Lands, if they chose to (which most did). To prevent the king's invasion, Ilúvatar destroyed Númenor beneath the ocean and set the Undying Lands forever beyond the reach of mortal Men. However, in SA 3319 ( Second Age), Sauron deceived Ar-Pharazôn, the King of Númenor, that the ruler of the Undying Lands would be granted immortality. Originally, mortals were allowed to trade with those from Valinor in the Undying Lands, but were forbidden to sail west beyond the sight of Númenor. With very few exceptions, only immortal beings were allowed to live in this realm, which gave rise to its name. The ocean Belegaer separated the Undying Lands from the western shores of Middle-earth. The area included the continent of Aman and the island of Tol Eressëa. The Undying Lands were a realm inhabited by Ainur and Eldar. ![]()
